Due to the “no more bubble text” avenue my editor wants to explore, I came up with the idea of a New Yorker coming down to Florida to get out of the cold. It’s hard coming up with ideas, and even harder when you can’t use any text to get your meaning across. Even though Spring Training was already officially underway for a few days, yesterday was the first official game played by the Mets against the University of Michigan, so the cartoon fit well in context. We had a big helping of snow in New York this past week too, so I thought that this guy would be getting out of the snow - don’t ask me why it didn’t melt - it’s a cartoon!
I didn’t use either the Yankees or Mets colors, logos, etc. here because I wanted it to be applicable to both or any of the teams, though the hat he’s wearing has Giants colors. I’m actually really happy with how the sun’s reflection in the water turned out here. I included the destination patch on his suitcase both for practical purposes of letting you know where he is, and also because years ago baggage used to have dozens of those stickers on them from the destinations people had been - you see them in a lot of the old Warners cartoons.
