Coughlin On the Clock

Ok, I admit it, I don’t have much today.  There’s buzz around whether Giants coach Tom Coughlin will be fired, and that his time is running out.  Simple, direct.

Coughlin on the clock
By Geoff Walter / SNY.tv

I can't believe what I just saw in the second half of the Giants-Redskins game, and I desperately want to know exactly what head coach Tom Coughlin said to his team in the locker room before Big Blue stormed back to take a 24-17 victory. This after the team went 0-2 and pictures of the entire defensive line sitting on the bench sulking and sullen with absolutely no desire in their faces flooded millions of TV screens. The Giants looked like they were ready to forfeit the entire season before it even got started. I never expected much more from Big Blue this year than what it showed in last season. So it's good that the team didn't quit, otherwise it would have been bad news for the Giants and curtains for Coughlin possibly by the middle of October.

What the heck did Coughlin say or do to turn them around? What did he threaten them with? Was it even him? If not the head coach, then who? The clock on Coughlin's tenure in the Meadowlands had already started its precipitous countdown last week, and one come from behind win won't stop it from reaching its eventual destination. The sword of Damacles is still perilously poised over his head, but if Sunday's showing is indicative of things to come, Coughlin will owe his job to the defensive line which finally showed up after weeks of being MIA.
Now instead of going 0-3, the team is 1-2, and for the time being avoids any comparisons to its '96 counterpart, which finished 6-10. Coughlin avoids having his name mentioned again in the same sentence as Dan Reeves, this time in terms of how they were both at the helm for horrific seasons that led to their dismissals.
