As you can see from the progression, the first Ref icon didn’t turn out that great.
I was using some cheap markers that often would run out of ink and didn’t color very well. The scan made things even worse.
I had taken a course several years ago that taught me how to use Photoshop in the hopes of landing a job, and I had purchased the Photoshop Elements program so I could do some work at my home as well.
The job never materialized and the software was just sitting there in my computer unused. Painstakingly I went over the lines (due to them not covering cartoons and line art in the course) and colored in the spaces again over a very long day.
My editor had e-mailed me and questioned what the note was doing there - the whistle has to have a sound, right? - so I removed it and thus the “Geoff the Ref” icon was born.
